Some Answers to Some Questions, Well An Answer to One Question Really...

U.S. Intervention in Haiti class work, which we did today (5/23/13).

#1 How have Haitians responded to the presence of U.S. Marines in their country?

The Haitians greatly despised the United States for their ongoing presence in their country. Charlemagne Peralte sent letters in 1915 criticizing the presence of the U.S. Marines in Haiti and started people in a resistance movement. He said that "Foe four years the [American] Occupation has been insulting us constantly. Each morning it brings us a new offense. The people are poor and the Occupation still oppresses us with taxes. It spreads fires and forbids us to rebuild wooden houses under the pretext of keeping the city beautiful." He is speaking for all the Haitians and encouraging them to rise up against America. The Americans are repressing them and all their actions, not letting them do anything that they want to do. The Haitians hate this and really don't like it. America won't even let then rebuild houses to keep their country pretty, which isn't fair to the Haitians. Building houses won't do anything, it's not like they are asking permission to run a rebellion. And because America won't let the Haitians do anything like that, they are going to rebel and rise up because they hate America for restricting them so much and want their freedom. At the end of Peralte's letter he says, "Die for your country. Long live Independence! Long live the Union! Long live the just war! Down with the Americans!" Which to me encompasses the whole feeling that the Haitians had toward the Americans. They were angry, downtrodden, and wanting of freedom. To get that they had to rebel and rise up, which is what Peralte is influencing. Overall the Haitians really hated the Americans for being in their country and repressing them in every way.

Today we worked on our 16% plan projects and I got a lot done! Yay! I finished two of the three parts of my quest. I had to make my own predator, which was a lot of fun and really enjoyable. I battled with GoogleDocs drawing to create my creature and it ended up pretty good I have to say. Also, needing to relate measurements of ancient predators to something today, I learned quite a bit. I know that a Twizzler is eight inches long and a fun-sized Milky Way bar is two inches. While it may not be on Jeopardy, if I have to explain how tall something is, let's take a 50 story building for example, I can explain. A 50 story building is 400 feet tall, but if you say that you can't really imagine how tall it is, but when you say is it 600 Twizzlers tall you can start to imagine how tall  it is, and it is really tall! So, that was history!

Today as well as yesterday we worked on multiple worksheets about the Monroe Doctrine and Roosevelt Corollary. We went through it chopped up into bite sized pieces and found the key words, summarized it, and then put it in out own words. That took up pretty much the entire class and when we were finished, we put all our "in our own words" segments to create our own. It was actually pretty fun. So, that was history!

Today in class we spent talking about Teddy Roosevelt and the Panama canal. We read part of one of his speeches and filled out this worksheet on it. It was pretty interesting how he had to convince every one that building the canal was a good thing. It was also funny to me how he said that he was the one who started  it, which it was actually the French and the U.S. bought the rights for building it from them... Hmm... Well. It was a pretty interesting class and I liked how the worksheet broke down the speech so we could really think about it and the meaning. So, that was history!

Let's Break some Barriers!

Our Breaking Barriers project is finally finished! You can watch it right here too! Yay! Allie, Hannah, and I hope you enjoy learning about Lech Walesa!

Well, today's history class really wasn't that exciting. We were all supposed to be working on our 16% project, but since everyone didn't have their stuff the class really didn't do much. So that is what my blog is going to be, not much. So, that was history!

But here's a whale!!!

For the past couple days in history we have been learning about the U.S. relations with the Native Americans and also a few of their famous leaders. We learned about Red Cloud and Sitting Bull, which was really interesting to see how they reacted to the horrible treatment that the U.S. gave them. So, that was history!

May 6th, 2013

The past couple days in history have been pretty interesting. On Friday we had a fishbowl debate. What might that be you ask? Well, I will tell you. We each got a side to represent, our side being Christian missionaries, and then one representative went to sit in a square of four desks and debate the topic given. The topic we had was about the Trail of Tears and pushing the Cherokee Indians out west. To finish up, we were told by Mr. Boyle to write a poem about the Cherokee's Burden. And so here it is!

The Cherokee's Burden
The Cherokee's burden,
Carried on their backs,
The debate among white men,
Having no say.

Pushed out of their homes,
With no possession,
Pushed into a foreign land,
Nothing to start anew.

White men have all the say,
Nothing to the Cherokee,
President Jackson says,
They will be be happy.

Misunderstood,
Taken advantage of,
Harshly treated,
This is the Cherokee's burden.

And today in history we worked on out 16% project, in which I had a fun time trying to draw my sea predator online. So, that was history!

Here we are! My adorable little game that I created on scratch!
CLICK THIS IF YOU WANT TO SEE IT!

Yesterday in history we worked on out projects once again and watched a movie about cowboys, which only catching glimpses of, made no sense to me at all. Today in history we started talking about United States imperialism. We got worksheets with poems on them about imperialism in the U.S. and talked about them as a group. We also wrote our own found poem from them about our views on imperialism in the United States.

April 30th, 2013

For the past couple days in history we have been working on out scratch projects. This has been quite a challenge, and that is an understatement. Working with scratch is really hard and confusing, fortunately I had some help figuring it out. So, that was history.

April 25th, 2013

The past couple days we have all been swimming in a shark tank, a theoretical one that is! We put together a presentation of farming tools that were used out on the prairie and then presented them to a couple "sharks" that would buy, or not buy, our tool. Our group had the reaper which was a great invention that cut down grain and also bundled it. It saved so much time and labor, being a great buy. The reaper was bought by the "sharks" as well as the thresher, which was a good at saving time and labor sorting the grain. The barbed wire wasn't bought, but I wasn't surprised. It was really dangerous, especially if it rusted and one of your cows got cut on it. It could get tetanus  and then if you kill it you will just give it to your family, which would be horrible! The other invention that wasn't bought was the steel plow, it was just an improvement of the plow and still needed laborers to work it, so it wasn't really a good investment. So, that was history!

Yesterday's history class we 16% project, which was a lot of fun. It was really interesting to learn all about giant sea predators. Today history was really fun too, which was because it was interactive. We got to go around to all these stations about the soddies that the homesteaders lived in. We smelled some sod, figured out the layout of a sod house with the real dimensions and learned how hard it was to pose for a picture for a minute straight. It must've been a really hard life living in a soddie. The space is so small and it was really dark inside too without windows. I don't think that I would've been able to live in one for too long. The space was too small and cramped for me. I would enjoy being able to ride my horse for miles straight, but that would only keep me sane for so long. I think that I would probably leave the soddie and move back into the city if I were living there. Overall today's class was really cool and interesting. So, that was history!

April 9th, 2013

We are going to try something a little different today in this post, it is going to be a diary entry by William Baker III, a merchant in the 1830's. So here goes!

April 9th, 1834

Business is booming! Trade has gone up by a huge percent and the cost has gone way down to transport our goods from place to place. Each trip we get more profit and it's slowly adding up. Lucy has been thinking of buying some new fine china for the house, which is something we've never had before. I've noticed that she's been buying more clothes than usual and spending money of more frivolous things that she never would've bought before the canal. Fortunately we can afford all these luxuries now that the canal has been up and running. I'm glad that they decided to build this canal, trade is better, business is better, everything is just better overall. Yes, with the population increase of the cities by the canal there is some pollution, but that can be all cleaned up. All I care about is my business and how much profit I can get in. The canal has been a lifesaver to our family, my trade company was going out of business but now it is thriving!

April 4th, 2013

Well, I'll give this post a go but don't expect too much. Basically everyone missed Wednesday's class because of the accuplacer test that we all had to take so I can't report on anything there. I myself missed today's class to get my braces off. So, I don't really know what we did exactly but I know that it was all about the war of 1812. I watched the sophia.org videos and such things on it, but I wasn't able to do the symbol, slogan, poem activity that everyone in class did. So, that was history!

April 2nd, 2013

It's reflection time! Today in class we had a debate... more of a one person explain and go around in a circle, sort of like circle time beck in elementary school... and this was about what caused the War of 1812. We were each in a group supporting a cause, mine was impressment, and then read some worksheets about it and made a "speech". It was a pretty interesting class information-wise but other than that it just bee-bopped along, not really getting into a debate like I was expecting. My opinion of what started the war didn't change at all, maybe it would've it we had been able to debate more and bring out more points on the subject. So, that was history!

March 27th, 2013

Yesterday we finished discussing the Black Panther's plan in a very heated argument. And that was all we really did. Today we worked on our story of the Civil Rights Movement project in class. It was highly frustrating because I couldn't connect to the internet with my laptop, but hopefully it will work better tomorrow! And that was a very short and sweet retelling of out history class the past couple days!

March 25th, 2013

Lets see here... History class on Monday the 25th. We talked about the Black Panthers and their Ten Point Program and filled out a worksheet. To be exact, we did the worksheet and then discussed what we wrote about. And I already covered what we did before the weekend, so I guess that was history!

March 20th, 2013

Well, I haven't blogged for so long that I need to play a bit of catch up! I don't really remember what we were doing in class, and going through my notes there wasn't anything on the 20th! What a dilemma! I will just go ahead and talk about what we did the next few days after the 20th, it'll be a bit like time travel. So cool. Anyways, we talked and discussed the Civil Rights Act of 1964. We also took a teeny bit of notes on what happened in Selma Alabama in March of 1965. What might this be you may ask, and the answer is this: a protest march asking for voting rights and they were assaulted by whites and law enforcement officials. So that was, or will be, history!

Monday, March 18, 2013

March 18th, 2013

Well since I already posted my documentary I don't have too much to talk about. Today we mostly listened to Mr. Boyle talk and finish worksheets that we did in class on Friday about Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr. So that was history!

March 14th, 2013

Happy Pi Day! And from then on that is the happiest this blog post is going to get. For the past few days in history we've been learning about the Freedom Riders. It is horrible how they were treated so cruelly for their nonviolent acts. During class we took notes on this and also watched a small video. We also got our final assessment for this unit, which is an ebook. Which will be an interesting project. So, that was history!

March 11th, 2013

Well, history was an interesting start to the new week. We started out by reading this blurb about segregation of schools and then had a mini discussion about segregation in schools. As a class we said there really wasn't, but then Mr. Boyle had to prove us wrong with this paper about a school whose white kids had hung nooses in trees and then a group of black kids beating up a white kid and how different their punishments were. That then sparked a huge discussion, although it felt like more of a debate, about if Triton was segregated. It went on for basically all of the rest of the class and a few minutes before we left Mr. Boyle handed us a few other papers on segregation of schools. And that was history!

Thursday, March 7, 2013

March 7th, 2013

Well, it seems to me that we killed a fair amount of trees today in history. Yesterday we got a worksheet and watched a video on Emmett Till and his horrific murder. During the movie we filled out the worksheet with questions like how his murder sparked the Civil Rights movement. Today we continued on with the Civil Rights movement and did a worksheet on the Montgomery Bus Boycott. We got 6 other papers, which helped us fill out the sheet and learn how the boycott was successful. Which it was through many various things, mostly of how the boycott really financially disabled the bus company since most of their riders were African-American and that they wouldn't give up on the boycott, not caring how many times they got arrested. So, that was history!

March 5th, 2013

Wow, it's March already! We are just flying through the year learning all this good history stuff! So the past couple days we've been doing lots of worksheets and such things on the fight to end segregation and bring equality to everyone. There are a fair amount of ideas of what the African-Americans should be doing, like demanding equality now, just waiting for it to figure itself out, or leave. Today we did worksheets about a court case, well 5 cases smushed into one, about segregation of schools. It was pretty interesting how the points of the case were pretty well balanced with neither side really having a large advantage of points. So, that was history!

February 28th, 2013

Unfortunately I don't know what happened in history today exactly since I was dismissed... But you still get an update! Yesterday in history we learned all about Marcus Garvey. He was a controversial African-American leader who started the UNIA and the Black Star Line. We got a packet of papers that had primary source documents and questions about those documents. So we worked on that all of class and had a bit of a discussion afterwards. So, that was history!

Wednesday, February 27, 2013

February 26th, 2013

Well, I forgot to blog yesterday which seems to happen quite frequently. But on to history! Monday we really didn't do too much, we basically went to history for 10 minutes or so since we had the assembly. For those 10 minutes however, Mr. Boyle gave us what I would call a mini-lecture on how to be better people. Which, I can actually see why he was telling us this because some people are mean and it's not nice to be around mean people, which basically goes without saying. But yesterday we really got into real historical things through worksheets. We were split up into As and Bs to work on the work sheet and then given numbers to share our information. The worksheets were about influential African-Americans and what their view on the country and equality and all that good stuff was. The men were W.E.B. Dubois and Booker T. Washington. Other than doing those worksheets, sharing, and then having a class discussion, we didn't do anything since that was the entire class. So, that was history!

Thursday, February 14, 2013

February 14th, 2013

Today in history we just drew on the board. Which, was pretty fun if I do say so myself. We were recording our drawings for our Reconstruction project and tomorrow we are going to record the voice over part of it. Sadly, I've been losing my voice and may not get to talk :/. Hm. Oh well! It'll still be good! But anyways, here's my timeline, yay! So that was history!

February 12th, 2013

Well... I forgot to blog! So to quickly recap, we didn't really do much! We didn't have school on Monday, and today we worked on our Reconstruction project. We drew a big sketch of our picture, which we already had done on a small scale. While it may seem very short, that was history!

Thursday, February 7, 2013

February 7th, 2013

Well today in history we didn't do too too much. We started off looking at a picture of some sharecroppers and we learned all about them. On the projector-thingie we read the textbook definition then looked at a sharecropper contract and compered the two. The textbook made it seem worse and more harsh, but why would you want to make it sound bad in the contract, then the sharecroppers wouldn't want to sign. Also we went over our project that's sue next week a little bit. And that's it really, so that was history!

Tuesday, February 5, 2013

February 5th, 2012

In the past few days we have succeeded to take a few pages of notes and get into a heated argument over equality. Before I get to the exciting part I have to quickly say that yesterday we took some notes and that was that. Now to the good stuff. Today Mr. Boyle asked ups what the meaning of equal was, and we said that it meant to be the same. Then he proceeded to give us a piece of paper of situations of equality and how it would be applied to these situations. Some were easy but one about doctor's treatments for patients got the class all in a tizzy. It was pretty interesting to think about. We then got a court case that tested equality and also the 14th and 15th amendments and discussed it. And that was history the past few days!

January 31st, 2013

Yesterday was a pretty fun class, who doesn't enjoy color coding maps with interestingly named crayons? I will back up a few steps though so you can understand how this map coloring came to be. We were handed these worksheets with the plans of Reconstruction, onto which we filled in information from our handy dandy textbooks of the three different plans. One of these plans was of the Radical Republicans, who would divide up the South and put it under various military rule. This military ruling was what we got to color code on the map on the back of the page. It was pretty fun! Today was less of a colorful adventure through history. We were handed a packet of the obituary of Andrew Jackson, which was jam packed full of information. This we read for most of the class than had a bit of a discussion afterwards after we were all finished reading. And that was history!

Tuesday, January 29, 2013

January 29th, 2013

Well we've had a couple pretty interesting days in history. Yesterday we went to the computer lab and did some worksheets and such things as you would expect with Mr. Boyle's class. They were all about the Black Laws and the South during the reconstruction. Today, we stayed put and worked in class, starting with another worksheet. After we did a few questions on this worksheet about the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments. Then we watched a short little video, answered a question, and then made a neat little, or rather pretty large, magazine cover about the amendments. It was a pretty fun class, so yup!  That was today and yesterday's super fun class of history with Mr. Boyle!

January 25th, 2013

I completely forgot to blog on Friday with my busy schedule so I'm bringing you what happened today! Yippie you get two for one! So, last week we talked about John Wilkes Booth and how he assassinated President Lincoln. Also about his "graceful" escape from the theater where he killed Lincoln. He did a great job of breaking his ankle that unfortunately led to his demise. We also took a lot of powerpoint notes and listened to some music that was inspired by Lincoln himself. And that was history!

Tuesday, January 22, 2013

January 22nd, 2013

To start off our new unit we get to have some fun blogging about Winnie the Pooh! After reading this website we were told to read I would think that I'm like Tigger since I'm always happy and bouncy and love my friends, but the website says otherwise. It says..., You are Winnie the Pooh. Oh, bother. You are sweet, simple, and popular for your honesty and goodwill. Though you may be the biggest personality in the woods, you sometimes need the help of others in the brains department!
Which is nice that I'm sweet, but I would  have to say that it's a bit offensive since it is basically saying that I'm not the brightest bulb in the box which I would say that I'm pretty bright at least. But oh well! I'm pretty happy with it overall.

Tuesday, January 15, 2013

January 15th, 2013

So the past couple days in history haven't been too too eventful. All we've been doing is studying for the midterm that we have on Friday and asking questions about the test and such things. And that is all I can really say about history class, so voila! That was history!

Thursday, January 10, 2013

January 10th, 2013

The past two days I can't really say much about. We had a test yesterday on the Civil war and I thought that it was a good, fair test. Then, today, Mr. Boyle handed out our study guides for the midterm that we will be having next week. And that was it really. After being handed the study guides we all went in our own ways doing whatever we did while we should have been making the study guide, but if you made the other study guides than you already did. So, that means I just have to highlight the terms on the sheet and voila! midterm study guide.

January 8th, 2013

Well, I forgot to blog completely since I was so caught up in studying for the history test that we had, or would it be have, on the 9th. So, I am quickly blogging now about what we did the other days. So, from  what I recall we learned about the nearing end and end of the Civil war. We took notes on power points about the Anaconda plan and the surrender of General Lee at Appomattox Court House. Also we got our study guides for this test that would be on the Civil war. They were a couple interesting days with the test coming so close and only learning about the end of the war the day before the test.

Friday, January 4, 2013

January 4th, 2013

Well, I was actually supposed to blog tonight but I blogged last night too. Oops! You just get to read about history twice as much! Yippie! So, today we started off by filling out a worksheet on a statue in Boston. We then took notes that related to the statue and the fact that black people could now join the military. That was about it, so that was history class today!

Thursday, January 3, 2013

January 3rd, 2013

Starting off the new year with a nice and simple blog, all about Mr. Lincoln and his Emancipation Proclamation. Unfortunately we dropped yesterday so I couldn't tell you what we did, so it's off to today's class. We started off class with a nice little introduction by Mr. Boyle and then some worksheets to read and fill out. After doing so we talked a bit about the real importance and significance of the Emancipation Proclamation. It is a pretty important document in the rallying of the Union army against the South, but did very little of actually freeing slaves. It only freed the slaves in the rebelling states, none in the Northern or border states. Although it did free only some of the slaves it enabled the Union to be able to have a stronger military and eventually beat the South. So, it was pretty important but I wouldn't be one of the people standing in line to see the document on New Years day since it didn't do as much as people really believe. And that was history today!
