April 9th, 2013

We are going to try something a little different today in this post, it is going to be a diary entry by William Baker III, a merchant in the 1830's. So here goes!

April 9th, 1834

Business is booming! Trade has gone up by a huge percent and the cost has gone way down to transport our goods from place to place. Each trip we get more profit and it's slowly adding up. Lucy has been thinking of buying some new fine china for the house, which is something we've never had before. I've noticed that she's been buying more clothes than usual and spending money of more frivolous things that she never would've bought before the canal. Fortunately we can afford all these luxuries now that the canal has been up and running. I'm glad that they decided to build this canal, trade is better, business is better, everything is just better overall. Yes, with the population increase of the cities by the canal there is some pollution, but that can be all cleaned up. All I care about is my business and how much profit I can get in. The canal has been a lifesaver to our family, my trade company was going out of business but now it is thriving!
